Mailware on a single PC
If you
plan to use Mailware on just one PC, and your data will be on the
same PC follow the directions below.
Note:
You can use a single license on as many PC’s as you wish, but only
one PC at a time may run Mailware. You can also install Mailware on
one PC and your data on another. In either case follow the
instructions for Networking Mailware below, instead of using these
steps.
- Install Mailware from the CD or
download the demo from the Mailware website (www.mailware.com).
Your license files will unlock the demo. When installing simply
answer Next at each prompt to accept the defaults.
- Mailware will open automatically,
or you can select it from the Windows Start button. Click
Start>All Programs>Mailware>Mailware XXXX (where XXXX is the
version number).
- At the top of the Mailware screen choose
File>Open Company from the text menu.

- In the dialog that opens click the radio
button next to Local Database.

- Click OK to close the dialog.
Mailware will open to the new, blank database.
- Close Mailware and
install your license files.
-
Open
Mailware. Click Tools>Preferences on the text menu at the
top of the Mailware screen.

-
Enter your company name and address in the Company Info tab
and click OK. You are ready to start adding your
information to Mailware.

Tip: We recommend you use the Setup Wizard on the
Mailware Explorer to enter specifics for your company (shipping
rates, ad source keys etc.).
Networking Mailware
If you are installing multiple copies of
Mailware on a network, or if your data will be on a different PC
than your Mailware install, follow the instructions below.
-
Choose a location for your Mailware data. This can be a server,
or any PC on your network (e.g., c:\maildata\data or
\\server\data).
Note:
Do not use mapped drives. You will get better results using
Windows Universal Naming Convention (UNC). This simply means
browsing to the data directory over your network. The resulting
path is the UNC. For example, if your data is on your server in
the maildata directory, the path from your network PC’s might be
\\server\maildata.
-
Install a blank database to your chosen location. You can:
-
Copy the local database
from any install of Mailware (the folder: c:|program
files\Mailware XXXX\data - where XXXX is the Mailware
version number). Simply drag or copy the entire data folder
to the new location.
-
Install a blank database
using the CD or the download available at
http://www.mailware.com/netdb.htm. When prompted during
the install, enter the patch where you would like the data
to be located.
-
Run Mailware, then
follow the steps below to create a new network database.
When prompted to update the database choose OK. This will
create a new, blank database (Note: This method is
not recommended in versions Mailware 2005 and prior as some
files may not be created properly - e.g., Zip Code tables.).
-
Copy your
license files into your
data directory.
-
Install Mailware at each PC on your network. By default,
each install will point to its own sample data directory. The
following steps show you how to change this to your network
database.
-
On
each PC run Mailware then follow the steps below.
-
Click Tools>Preferences
on the Mailware text menu.

-
Click the Network tab.

-
Make sure the Override BDE
checkbox is checked.

-
Enter
the Control File directory.
This must be the same on all PC’s. We recommend using the
data directory you selected in step 1. If you are adding a
license to an existing install you can use your existing
directory (for help locating your data directory please visit
http://www.mailware.com/quicktip002.htm).
Tip: Highlight
the path you enter and hold Ctrl and press C to copy it. You
will be using this path again in the following steps.
-
Next click the
button. A warning message will pop up. Click OK to
continue.
-
In the dialog that appears
click the Configuration tab in the left pane. Double
click Configuration if it is not expanded. Then double
click Drivers and below it double click Native.
Single left click on Paradox.

-
In the right pane click on the
first line next to the cell labeled NET DIR. Type or
paste (Ctrl V) the Control File directory from step 9. Or, click
on the browse button (…) that appears and browse to your data
directory.

-
Click another field in
the right pane (e.g., 3.0 next to VERSION) to exit the NET DIR
field and enter the change (Note: the tab key will not
exit the field, you must click another field with the mouse or
press the down arrow key on your keyboard).
-
Close the BDE Administrator
with the X in the top right corner of the dialog. When
prompted answer Yes to save the changes and OK to
the prompt regarding restarting applications.
-
Click OK to close the Network Preferences dialog.
-
Click File>New Company on the text menu at the very top
of the Mailware screen.

-
In
the dialog that opens type a name for your company in the
Name field.

-
In
the Directory field type
or paste (Ctrl V) the Control File directory from step 9. Or,
click on the browse button (…) that appears and browse to your
data directory.
-
Click OK. Mailware will open to your company database.
-
IMPORTANT: Close Mailware then
repeat the above steps for each
PC on the network. After you have setup the last PC and close
Mailware on that and every machine follow the next steps.
-
Open Mailware on any one PC. Click Tools>Preferences
on the text menu at the top of the Mailware screen.

-
Enter your company name and address in the Company Info tab
and click OK. Then close Mailware.

-
Open Mailware on every machine in your network. If you
receive an error message that reads "Database Controlled by
other .NET file" see the Troubleshooting section below. If no
error messages appear you are ready to start using your new
company.
Tip: We recommend you use the Setup Wizard on the
Mailware Explorer to enter specifics for your company (shipping
rates, ad source keys etc.).
Troubleshooting
If
you run Mailware and receive the error: "Database Controlled by
other .NET file":
-
Run Mailware at each PC and
repeat the steps above. If the problem persists close all copies
of Mailware and delete the following files on each PC.
PARADOX.NET
PDOXUSRS. NET
PDOXUSRS. LCK
PARADOX. LCK
-
To locate the above files click
the Windows Start button, move the cursor to Find or Search. In
the Named or File Name field in the search dialog that appears
type: *.LCK;*.NET
-
In the Look In field select My
Computer from the drop down list, and click the Find Now or
Search button.
-
In the lower portion of the
dialog each of the above named files will appear. Click each in
turn and press the Delete key on your keyboard to remove the
file. If you receive a message that a file is in use, or cannot
be deleted make sure ALL copies of Mailware and any other
programs are closed, then try again.
-
After deleting all the files
run Mailware at all PC’s again. If the error persists at this
point you may have a network problem. This is usually caused by
a bad network card or poor cabling. A PC on the network will not
be able to see the other PC’s because of dropped packets which
cause high traffic and lost data. As a result the PC will
attempt to write its lock files to its own C:\ drive. If you are
having this problem you may also receive Index Out of Date and
other data corruption errors. To solve the problem you can
disconnect one PC at a time from your network and run Mailware
for a day. Then attach it and disconnect another PC. By process
of elimination you can usually find the PC causing the problem.
Try using a new network card or shorter cabling. Also, check the
Network settings to ensure you are not using the wrong protocols
(see Windows Networking help for details). Be sure to disconnect
Printers too as they can cause a similar problem if they have
network cards.
Another solution is to run Client/Server (see below).
Client/Server
If you are using the client/server version of Mailware follow the
instructions below.
Note: You must follow the steps above for Networking Mailware
before setting up client/server.
- First, set up Mailware using the
instructions above for Networking Mailware.
Client/Server is more secure and is much less prone to data
corruption. Only the server accesses the data so if it is in
good working order you will not see any data corruption. The
workstations access it only via the server. To set up
client/server.
You need the client/server software from the following link. Run
it on your server.
http://www.mailware.com/pub/MWCSEngine.exe
You will also need the Database System Utilities from the
following link. Run this install on your server as well:
http://www.mailware.com/pub/Mailware2005DatabaseUtility.exe
- Next, create a directory on your
server and share it. Place the attached clientserver.ini file in
that folder. Open the clientserver.ini file with notepad
(right-click it and select Open With... then choose Notepad),
and change the IP address to the one on your host PC.
To check your IP address click the Windows Start button then
choose Control Panel (you may need to select Settings, then
Control Panel). Double click Network Connections. In the dialog
that opens double-click your network connection. In the dialog
that opens click the Support tab which displays your IP address
(Note: this is the IP address for the PC, not necessarily its IP
for the Internet.).
- You will also need to copy your
reports folder from your current data directory (if you need
help locating your data directory please visit
http://www.mailware.com/quicktip002.htm or see the
installing license files topic
below) to this new folder as well as the attached temporary
license files, if applicable.
- On your sever, click the Windows
Start button and select All Programs>DBISAM Additional Software
and Utilities>Server Administration Utility.
- In the window that opens choose
File>Login to Server. When prompted enter Admin as the
User Name and DBAdmin as the password.

- Click the Databases tab
and then the Add button. In the Name field that
appears type Mailware. Browse to the directory that
contains the clientserver.ini file, then click Save.
Note: You must name the database Mailware.

- Click the Users tab and
click the Add button to enter users. Add as many users as
you wish.

- Click the Database Users tab
and then click Add at the bottom. Select one of the users
you added from the pulldown that lights up. Check all the
Rights to Grant and click Save. Repeat this for all
users.

- Close the Server Administration
Utility.
- Run Mailware and click
File>New Company from the text menu. Give the company a name
and browse to the directory that contains the clientserver.ini
file. Click OK.
You must do this at each PC in your network that runs Mailware.
You can switch between your old company (which is direct access
to the database) and the client/server company anytime you wish.
In order to ensure client/server is running exclusively (and
thus verify the database errors are due to network trouble)
everyone must be pointed to the client/server company. Please be
careful when testing that not a single pc is directly linked to
the database. You may wish to remove sharing on the data
directory temporarily to ensure this.
- To log in at each PC choose
File>Open Company and select the new company. You will be
prompted to enter your User ID and password you created in step
7 above. If you have Mailware security turned on you will be
prompted to log in to Mailware as well. If you are not prompted
to log in to client/server try using File>Open Company and
selecting the new company again.
Once you have everything set up you can run Mailware normally
with minimal exceptions (Note that Backup will not work on
individual PC's and that reports will be run from the new report
folder you copied in step 2). You can now agressively use
Mailware and see if you receive any data errors. If you do the
problem is most likely on your server (the one that is accessing
the data directly). If not, then you may want to switch to
client/server or you can locate the source of the problem in
your network and fix it.
The clientserver.ini file can be created in
Notepad. Cut and paste the following and change the IPAddress to the
IP where the data is hosted.
[Settings]
UseClientServer=1
IPAddress=127.0.0.1
Port=12005
HostName=
Service=
[Comments]
//Store this ini file in the directory that contains the reports and
tools directories
//Set File>New Company on each PC to the same directory
Installing License Files
For all setup methods you need to copy your
license files to your Mailware data directory. (Note: For
client/server copy the license files into your data directory, not
the directory that contains the clientserver.ini file).
License files contain your personal information (name, address,
phone and email) and the number of workstations you purchased. It is
illegal to distribute your license files to any other party. Please
do not pirate any software, especially Mailware.
To install your license files:
- Locate your data directory. If this is a
new install your data directory is in the location you specified
in the steps above. If you are not sure of the location, or if
you are adding license files to an existing install follow these
steps.
- Open Mailware. Be sure all
windows except the Mailware Explorer are closed (e.g.,
Customer, Orders etc.)
- Click File>Open Company on the
text menu.

- One of 3 database options will be selected in the top
portion of the dialog. The selected
option indicates your data directory as follows:

- Local Database - This is the
blank database located below your Mailware installed
directory. The default location is c:\program
files\Mailware XXXX\data - where XXXX is the version
number..
- Sample Database - This is the
sample database located below your Mailware installed
directory. The default location is c:\program
files\Mailware XXXX\sampdata.
- Network Database - You can set
up as many individual databases as you wish. These can
reside anywhere on your local PC or network. You can see
the location of each Network Database in the lower
portion of the dialog or you can click any one and
select the Edit button.
- Click Cancel to close the dialog.
Then close Mailware.
- Make sure Mailware is closed. Then
copy the mwctrl.dat and mwctrl.idx files into your
data directory. If prompted to overwrite existing files choose
Yes.
- Open Mailware on any PC. Click
Help>About on the text menu. Your license information will
be displayed in the About dialog.

- Repeat these steps for any additional
companies you may have created in Mailware. Each company
requires its own set of license files.
